Young pitchers set the pace of the little league game. Young pitchers feel great when they strike out the No. They float to the dugout when after a one, two, three inning. The baseball pitcher gets walk off after the third out.
It is a rewarding position to play in baseball. It can also be very humbling when you lose the strike zone, start getting hit, or your defense has trouble helping you out. Pitching is much more than just throwing the baseball past hitters. The top three rules for baseball pitchers are as old as baseball itself.
At eight or nine years old you can get away most of time with just throwing heat past hitters. As you get older however, off unless you learn how to change speeds, and change location, hitters will begin to hit your fastball. Some of these reasons we will cover in later articles. Baseball pitchers will have a wide variety of throwing motions. As a coach you need to present options to your young pitchers. If you are looking for a simple hitting drill for your youth baseball players to use at practice and at home, the fence drill is one of your drills.
When done correctly, the fence drill develops a compact swing, bat speed and also teaches the hitter to attack the inside part of the baseball. Attacking the inside part of the baseball is a very important skill to teach your players. By hitting the inside part of the ball, the player will be able to hit the ball to all fields. If the hitter keeps his hands inside the baseball, the hitter has an advantage over the pitcher because he has the ability to hit the ball to all fields hard.
The pitcher has a huge advantage if the batter is a pull hitter because anything on the outside part of the plate becomes very difficult for the batter to hit hard. If the ballplayer does this drill correctly, he will take his normal stride followed by his normal swing and his bat will not hit the fence. If the bat hits the fence, he did not attack the inside part of the baseball and his swing is too long.
Encourage him to use a more compact swing and tell him to visualize hitting the inside part of the ball. All hitters should be able to consistently swing the bat during the fence drill without hitting the fence. As time goes on and the player gets better with the fence drill, he will be able to do this drill on his own and get immediate feedback. There is no better drill to teach your players to round the bases, which puts them in position to take an extra base when the opportunity presents itself.
This is also great drill to finish a practice — your players wont be able to wait for next time! Best of all this drill works even on those early spring days when the infield is too soft for a scrimmage. I will even do this inside on a gym floor during winter conditioning or when rain prevents outdoor practice.
Setup In the outfield grass, throw down four heavy rubber bases 30 feet apart in a square, and designate a base as home plate. Split up into evenly matched teams of four. Team 1 puts defensive players with a glove at each base. Team 3 puts players with gloves well behind each base to back up passed balls. Place base coaches in their boxes at first and third a good spot for the extra player from Team 2 , while an adult coach serves as umpire calling safe and out as each play occurs.
Any additional players or coaches should grab a glove and help backup a base. When setting up indoors, use duct tape to secure the bases to the floor. Rules The object of the game is for the offense to try to score five runs before the defense gets five outs.
Outs are achieved by tagging any runner while off base. Base runners are allowed to lead off, which is the situation in youth league games any time the ball is in play. Following an out, the runner is allowed to remain on the closest base to where the out was made. Outs made on the scoring runner at home plate do not count as a run. Backups are not allowed to make outs, only retrieve passed balls and throw to a base.
Coaches may put a limit on extra bases after an overthrow if the situation calls for it. When one team wins, rotate backups become basemen, basemen become runners, and runners become backups. Due to more accurate throws and catches, advanced or teenage teams must allow the offense to score a run for EVERY runner that crosses the plate. Offensive Strategy Base runners want to draw the throw by leading off their base as far as possible, while maintaining a balanced athletic position to get back to the base if needed diving back to a base is legal and encouraged.
The base runner furthest from the ball is able to take the biggest lead. Runners must decide to either return to their base or take off on the throw, trying to gain the next base. The base coaches directions are essential as runners heading for a base usually cannot see the ball coming. If there is no throw to the base, runners especially trailing runners should round their bases aggressively, taking as big a lead as possible towards the next base and once again trying to draw a throw to the base behind them.
Lead runners should be more conservative since they are closer to scoring and let the trailing runners sacrifice themselves if necessary in order to trade an out for a run.
Inexperienced runners typically slow down and stay too close to a base they have already gained, so I find it takes constant prodding by the base coach to take an effective lead towards the next base. There is a lot of sliding in this drill. Sliding is a skill that needs to be taught through repetition as doing it properly and safely does not come naturally to most youth players. It pays to have worked specifically on sliding before attempting this drill.
Defensive Strategy In order to get the upper hand, the defense must remain focused on preventing the lead runner from advancing to home. Smart trailing runners will take large or even huge leads to draw the throw behind them or otherwise distract the defense, allowing the lead runner a good chance to score.
Smart defensive players may pretend to be distracted but are ready to throw home when the runner at third breaks. Basemen must position themselves to make the catch well inside the baselines to avoid obstructing base runners. This can take a lot of reminding as most players seem to act as if their leg is stuck to the base.
Both thrower and receiver need to be on the same side of the baseline, creating a throwing lane. Advise defensive players if they want the ball thrown to them they must appear ready to catch the ball by having their hands up. Throws must be accurate and catches made, as passed balls result in every base runner taking extra bases while the ball is retrieved.
Target basemen can help by squaring themselves to the thrower, in an athletic position that will allow them to get to an offline throw. Spin drill — outfielders often have to cut balls off in the gaps, or down the lines, only to have to spin and make a quick, strong throw to a base. Outfielders are hit balls to their left and right to practice this catch, spin, and throw outfield drill. Allowing the ball to possibly get by them is of no consequence as the game is over if they miss it.
Cut off drill — very important for successful outfield and team play is the ability to hit cutoff players for possible relays. Coaches take an infield and outfield practice, with or without runners, as infielders practice lining up to the correct bases as outfielders practice throwing to and through cut off men.
Tag up fly ball drill — coaches set up base runners and have them tag up on fly balls, as outfielders practice getting behind the ball, moving into it, catching balls on their throwing side with two hands and throwing to the base that the runner is advancing to. Shoestring, dive or slide drill — it is difficult to practice dive plays because of the risk of injury.
However, the practice of shoe string and sliding catches can be done with soft hit fly balls where players practice whether to reach and make a shoe string catch or slide, as into a base, and catch balls. Any headfirst dive practice should involve players moving only a short distance, so the risks of hard-falling injuries are minimal.
Crow hop drill — Many kids try to get rid of the ball so quickly when strong outfield throws are necessary that they do not take a strong crow hop necessary to get the most on the throw. It may be best to have young players exaggerate this crow hop at first and set up like a pitcher with the high knee lift, before stepping forward to throw.
Long arm throw drill — many kids short arm the outfield throw instead of taking the time to get a strong, long-armed throw off. Similar to the previous drill and combining this with the crow hop drill, players begin with both arms extended and hop on their rear foot a few times until the coach yells throw.
Fence drill — having kids approach the homerun, or foul ball fence, to catch fly balls is best done with players standing near them before coaches throw balls up near the fence. Practicing jumping to catch these balls is a fun and necessary to include when doing outfield drills. For coaches, who are not proficient with hitting balls to outfielders, it is best to throw balls instead when practicing outfield drills to get more repetitions.
